SO THEY FIGHT explores the war in Ukraine through frontline civilians and everyday Ukrainians. Filmmaker and reserve officer Ilmar Raag volunteers to deliver aid deep into Ukraine’s warzones. He comes across Ukraine’s many faces – from shattered cities to villages that have rarely witnessed the presence of warplanes. The people he meets are different, but they all fight for Ukraine.

Since the outset of the full-scale war, Raag has returned to Ukraine again and again as a volunteer aid worker and filmmaker, witnessing the war alongside hospitaliers, soldiers, medical personnel and even comedians. Among them are both Ukrainians and foreigners who have joined the fight against Russian aggression.

Raag has gained access to places untouched by mainstream media, spending months among those who voluntarily dedicate their time and effort – often at great personal risk – to the survival of their nation. The film presents a kaleidoscopic view of the war, revealing how, despite working toward a common goal, the characters do not shy away from criticizing the government or each other. Whether through a stand-up performance aimed at political shortcomings or candid reflections on disorganized logistics, the film does not gloss over the harsh realities Ukraine faces today.

SO THEY FIGHT is a tribute to the resilience and determination of volunteers.

“I wanted to make an honest film, though it’s almost impossible to show everything in one documentary. I chose a symphonic form—showing different people, most of whom are not soldiers but volunteers. It matters, because if Ukraine has not lost its freedom, it’s only thanks to the tireless effort of many different kinds of people. Some of them swear, some may hold strange opinions, some even speak the enemy’s language—but all of them fight for Ukraine.” - Ilmar Raag, Director
